Bitter Sweet

The contrasts of this life are amazing, frustrating, delightful, bewildering. In one day, within the span of one minute, contained within the space of a microsecond we witness incredible lunging forward and such sad falling backward. Sunday was another exhausting day of helplessly watching Al's body quickly failing him as we all pitched in to make him as comfortable as possible. Sunday was also a sunny day in which Irene and Colin took the boys on a wonderful hike to the Quabbin resevoir, eating tootsie rolls, singing songs, catching frogs, swimming like fish, throwing rocks, swatting at mosquitos, and tiring out our whole bodies including our cheek muscles from all the smiling. Strange to have so close, one on his way out and others learning to catch frogs on the way in... I am a firm believer that this life is just the first stop of many our our journey towards God but I guess not having experienced the death of someone close I am finding the contrasts frustrating, amazing, bewildering, and delightful.

Reunion Tidbits

The previous post by the way was inspired by Amán who had just taught himself the art(?) of crossing his eyes. We just came back from a week in western massachusetts. We had another hectic yet highly successfull Alschuler family reunion given the circumstances. Elena came up from NYC, Lise and Ann from Chicago, Zoe and Cload from Canada, Suzzane flew out from Santa Barbara, Brian came up from Knoxville, TN and the rest of us made the drive out from Shutesbury. We spent the week hiking, swimming, playing miniature golf and playing boggle between meals. I commuted in to work every morning and was back in time each evening for dinner and bedtime routines (no vacation accrued yet). Other tidbits? Well, I bought another mountain bike a few weeks ago and I am excited to get out and explore some new trails around here. My last "friend" of 10 years I left in the attic of our house in Costa Rica for David. I put some spectacular miles on that last bike and I think it still has quite a bit more left in it. My contributions at work are getting "chunkier" and I am starting to feel like a real contributing member of the team. It's funny how that tends to take "so long" at new jobs. I still have alot to relearn but atleast I am feeling like I can contribute. They have shut down the plant for this upcoming week and sent everyone home which will give me the opportunity to tackle some projects around the house, help Al out wherever I can, break in the bike etc. Did I tell you that Alfie and Ericka got 6 Guinea hens? The chicks need to be held daily and the boys are very happy. We are hoping they we help control the tick (and general insect) population around the house. Well I am kinda spacey right now and ready for bed. I will throw more out later.

4th of July 5

While I was at Dad's they got their pics of Josh and Cynthia's wedding. I managed to digitize a few. You guys are so beautiful!!! I wish I could have been there. Here are a few.

4th of July 4

We also had chance to visit the magical cabin of John Borroughs and its surroundings. He was a famous naturalist who did extensive early work in favor of the environment. Then I left, alone, back to MA to go to work. The kids stayed with their grandparents for the rest of the week! It worked out well with everyone getting along just wonderfully through almost all of it. The kids came back exhausted but very happy! Thanks again Janet and Dad!

4th of July 3

We took a great hike to a place called the stone church in Dover Plains. During the hike you could really tell that the land had actually just been opened up to the public. Beautiful, untouched, soft moss grew everywhere and the water is crystaline. The water drops down out of the valley through this great cave-like stone structure. We hiked into the cave and above it and swam below it. The inside-out pic was taken at the top of a wooden ladder on a ledge inside.

4th of July 2

On saturday I took the kids to Dad and Janet's place in Beacon NY. We had some very relaxing, chill time that involved walking, eating, swimming, exploring, as well as new videos and books. We went swimming in a great pool with Anna one day (it has been hot and muggy like only a New England summer can be). Isaiah and Aman both took huge leaps forward: Isaiah teaching himself the art of skateboarding (for real) and Amán the art of the scooter (again for real). They were both zooming down the street in the early morn with me watching them (praying for their protection under my breath). I now understand what my folks went thru with me... vamos a ver!!! We also had a chance to visit great grandma who is doing well aside from the fact that you have to retell your story to her each time you see her. She is sweet and showered the kids with sweets and they returned with lots of hugs.

4th of July 1

Fourth of July long weekend. Lise and Ann came in from Chicago and Elena came in from NY city to be with Al. The previous week was a big one for Britt who basically took on helping Al thru the difficult moments on her own since Alfie and Ericka were in PA and VA visiting family. It was stressful and the added help of all the other siblings (Alfie and Ericka also returned a couple of days early) was a warm welcome.
